About Us
Our History
|
In 1988 a program for tutoring adults in reading began under the leadership of Sherry Snyder and was funded through grants and administered by the St. Clair County Library System. In August 1995 funding ran out and by the late fall of 1997, a volunteer group was developing restructure plans led by Jane Barden. By January 1998, the St. Clair County Library Literacy Project emerged under an umbrella organization, Michigan Literacy Inc. In August 2011 our organization became our own 501C3 under our new name “St. Clair County Literacy Project”. The project is the only free service available to adults with limited reading ability (under a 6th grade level), some of which attend adult public school systems and St. Clair County Community College.

Our mission is to respond to the effects of illiteracy in our community by spreading awareness and advancing the ability of our adult citizens to read and write at levels that allow them to function successfully in society. |
